Head of Portfolio Investment Team

Aqua-Spark (Forbes, Impact 50), a fast-growing global investment fund, active in innovative solutions to food security and ocean conservation through aquaculture is looking for a Head of Portfolio to extend the team!  

Aqua-Spark is a global investment fund that makes investments in sustainable aquaculture businesses that generate investment returns while creating positive social and environmental impact. The fund is building an ecosystem of small to medium-sized enterprises across the global aquaculture value chain to make aquaculture more sustainable, healthier and more accessible for all. The Job 

As the Head of Portfolio your main responsibility is to lead the Portfolio Management Department to reaching an optimum result for the fund’s investors and portfolio companies within the context of Aqua-Spark’s investment strategy and impact objectives. The position oversees all portfolio management operations and portfolio investment activities to ensure they produce the desired results and are consistent with the overall Aqua-Spark’s strategy and mission. This results in investment recommendations for the CPO and the investment committee. You are responsible for the follow-on investment process of the portfolio companies. This includes, among other tasks: proactive portfolio management and support, in depth due diligence of investee companies, term sheet/deal negotiations. You are responsible for (managing of) writing and presenting reports. The Departments forms the Investment Department, together with the Departments Dealflow, New Deals and Boards. You report directly to the Chief Portfolio Officer. 

 

Key responsibilities 

  • Responsible for reaching an optimum result for the fund’s investors and portfolio companies within the context of Aqua-Spark’s investment strategy and impact objectives . 
  • Responsible for thorough analyses of various investment cases of follow-on investments on portfolio investments, company financials and returns, impact factors, deal structure, investment amount, risk assessment, product and market description, negotiate term sheets, etc.. including the (coordination of the) the on- and off site in-depth due diligence process on portfolio investments (covering company financials, legal, business economics, business drivers, market, product(s), team, etc.).
  • Support portfolio to help them strive and thrive. 
  • Monitor, guide and manage portfolio companies’ performance in the implementation of strategy by: helping  portfolio to establish strategy; prioritizing and planning initiatives; monitoring the portfolio aimed at realization of long and short term organizational goals for both the portfolio company as Aqua-Spark’s investment strategy and objectives; analyzing through KPIs for the portfolio companies, quarterly reports, etc..
  • Making information and learnings available and actionable for the investment team and Aqua-Spark as an organization.
  • Responsible for the investment process regarding follow on investments, proposals to the investment committee.
  • Closely coordinating with the CIO and CROO on impact and risk.
  • Lead the department, grow the department and its members. Training the team, team motivation, developing a high performing team. 
  • Cooperation with the New Deal team, Head of Boards/team of portfolio companies, the CPO, CEO/CROO/CDO/CIO and the team to set the Key Performance Indicators for the portfolio companies, to monitor both financial and non-financial performance of the existing portfolio investments, and to provides (pro-)active support to portfolio companies to optimize Portfolio results. 
  • Shows leadership and engagement with defining new investment process improvements to promote efficiency and scalability.  
  • Pro-actively build sustainable relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as portfolio companies, experts and consultants, investors, etc.,. Professionally represent Aqua-Spark at conferences and events in order to connect with and establish professional relationships within the worldwide Aqua-Spark network.  
  • Keep up-to-date on information that is relevant to the aquaculture industry in aqua-Spark’s value chain and specializes in aquaculture and its (financial) markets. 

 

What does it take to be successful working at Aqua-Spark in this position

Requirements 

Besides a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in corporate or commercial law, Business Administration, Economics, or similar discipline, you have 10 or more years of professional working experience in a position with a similar level of responsibility, for example in impact investing, PE/VC, corporate finance or business development.

You have experience with:

  • Closing a variety of investment deals, negotiation, deal structure, due diligence and dealing with an independent investment committee. 
  • You have experience in investing in SME’s/early stage companies as well as later stage. Preferably demonstrable experience with helping to bring early stage SME’s to maturity as an investor. Experience with pre series A, series A, Series B, series C, Series D investment. Making initial investments, but also follow on-Investments; 
  • Experience in leading and supporting leadership teams; 
  • You have strong understanding of corporate finance and performance management principles; 
  • Experience working in an International environment, having an international mindset with cultural awareness; 
  • Experience with business planning, negotiating and financial modeling; 
  • Experience with structuring and continuously improving work processes and coordinating external advisors; 

Furthermore… 

  • Eager to learn, have broad interests with an understanding of world business and financial affairs and an awareness of trends and current activity in the relevant (financial) markets. Ability to understand in a short period of time a new branch, market, product; 
  • Excellent financial and verbal analytical skills, ability to process large amounts of (complex) information in a short period of time, and turn into relevant and concise deliverables that allow for efficient decision-making; 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a high degree of professionalism in English and preferably a second language; 
  • Experience working with financial statements, financial modeling and business planning; 
  • Excellent negotiation skills; 
  • Works independently to successfully contribute to and complete an investment process;  
  • Experience with processing legal documentation/information; 
  • Alignment with Aqua-Spark’s values, preferably understanding of the global food production and the agri-/aquaculture industry and knowledge and experience in and willing to follow trends and developments in aquaculture; 
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook); familiarity with databases; excellent IT/computer skills in general; 
  • Having experience and a good understanding of corporate governance is preferred; 
  • Board experience, experience with PE and/or IPO is preferred 
  • Familiarity with diverse business functions such as Investor relations, PR, Finance, etc..is preferred. 
  • Willingness to travel.
