Investment Manager New Deals – Sub Saharan/East Africa

Aqua-Spark (Forbes, Impact 50), a fast-growing global investment fund, active in innovative solutions to food security and ocean conservation through aquaculture is looking for an Investment Manager to extend the team!

Aqua-Spark is a global investment fund that makes investments in sustainable aquaculture businesses that generate investment returns while creating positive social and environmental impact. The fund is building an ecosystem of small to medium-sized enterprises across the global aquaculture value chain to make aquaculture more sustainable, healthier and more accessible for all. You work in a great team, where communication is key! You report to the Head of New Deals.

Investment Manager New Deals – Sub Saharan/East Africa

The Job

As the Investment Manager New Deals- SSE Africa your main responsibility is turning high quality leads into a final agreement on investments primarily in Sub Saharan/ East Africa. This includes, among other tasks: initial due diligence of potential investee companies, term sheet negotiations, in-depth due diligence (covering company financials, legal, business economics, business drivers, market, product(s), team, etc.), and writing and presenting reports to the team and the Investment Committee. You will be part of the New Deals team which is part of the Investment Team (Dealflow, New Deals Team, Portfolio management and Boards).

 

Key responsibilities

  1. Together with Senior Investment Manager, drives the overall process of making high quality investments with a focus primarily on SSE Africa by turning high quality leads into final investment agreements that achieve optimum result for the fund’s investors and portfolio companies within the context of Aqua-Spark’s investment strategy and impact objectives;
  2. Works closely together with the Dealflow Team on the analysis of leads, to identify which companies in SSE African region are most promising for Aqua-Spark’s portfolio;
  3. Together with Dealflow Team, presents promising new leads that are in a progressed state to the relevant members of the Investment Team;
  4. Together with Senior Investment Manager, is responsible for the (coordination of the) on- and off-site due diligence process on potential portfolio investments, which includes in-depth due diligence on the team, company financials and returns, impact factors, deal structure, investment amount, risk assessment, product and market description, etc.;
  5. Makes thorough analyses of various investment cases focused on the African continent;
  6. Together with Senior Investment Manager, negotiates term sheets and works with Legal on negotiating final documentation;
  7. Writes investment proposals for the Investment Committee regarding potential investments, describing findings in the due diligence process;
  8. After a new investment is made, works together with Portfolio / Board Team to ensure a smooth handover to these teams and to set key performance indicators for the new portfolio company;
  9. Shows leadership and engagement with defining new investment process improvements to promote efficiency and scalability;
  10. Pro-actively builds sustainable relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as (potential) portfolio companies, experts and consultants, investors, etc., and professionally represent Aqua-Spark at conferences and events in order to connect with and establish professional relationships. As needed, the Investment Manager will connect with and establish relationships within the worldwide Aqua-Spark network;
  11. Keeps up to date on information that is relevant to the aquaculture industry in Aqua-Spark’s value chain and specializes in aquaculture and its (financial) markets.

 

What does it take to be successful working at Aqua-Spark in this position?

Requirements

  • You have at least 2 years of working experience in actively participating in investment negotiation, deal structure and due diligence.
  • Experience in investing in SME’s/early-stage companies. Preferably demonstrable experience with helping to bring early-stage SME’s to maturity as an investor and with dealing with an independent investment committee. Experience with pre Series A, Series A, Series B, Series C, Series D investment. Making initial investments, but follow-on investment experience is also welcome.
  • You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Business/Finance or similar discipline.
  • You have 5 or more years of professional working experience in a position with a similar level of responsibility, for example in impact investing, PE/VC, corporate finance or business development.
  • Experience in working with/investing in SMEs, preferably with a sustainability, environmental and/or social focus within Sub Saharan/East Africa;

Furthermore…

  • Eager to learn, have broad interests with an understanding of world business and financial affairs and an awareness of trends and current activity in the relevant (financial) markets. Ability to understand in a short period of time a new branch, market, product;
  • Excellent financial and verbal analytical skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a high degree of professionalism in English and preferably a second language;
  • Ability to process large amounts of (complex) information in a short period of time, and turn into relevant and concise deliverables that allow for efficient decision-making;
  • Experience working with financial statements, financial modeling and business planning;
  • Excellent negotiation skills;
  • Works independently to successfully contribute to and complete an investment process;
  • Experience with processing legal documentation/information;
  • Alignment with Aqua-Spark’s values, preferably understanding of the global food production and the agri-/aquaculture industry and knowledge and experience in and willing to follow trends and developments in aquaculture;
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook); familiarity with databases; excellent IT/computer skills in general;
  • Having experience and a good understanding of corporate governance is preferred;
  • Willingness to travel
